Anonymous advisers to John McCain recently said the campaign is anxious to "turn the page" on the national financial meltdown and move on to less damaging subjects -- by which they apparently meant Obama's alien, mysterious, threatening character.
Any hopes that the page will be turned in time to make a difference on November 4 are dwindling as markets resist the efforts at reassurance by central banks, and as the credit crunch continues.
Finally, let's remember that McCain's last real hope for a turnaround is the third and last debate, Oct. 15 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, Long Island, to be moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS. What's the announced subject for this debate -- agreed to long ago by both campaigns?
The economy.
McCain just can't catch a break.
